Two college students, two locations, 3 vehicles and a lot of stuff. First stop, Altoona Pennsylvania. Second stop, State College Pennsylvania.
A well-organized experience!
Last Thursday, we packed up the cars and headed off to central Pennsylvania, to move Cade into his first college dorm room and Kyle to his first apartment. Not only were their cars packed full, ours was too!
Arriving in Altoona, we checked into our hotel and enjoyed a lovely dinner and a little relaxation before the big day the following morning!
We arrived at PSU Altoona at 8:00 Friday morning and we were greeted by a very welcoming staff. It was a well-organized excellent experience! A number of volunteers were there ready to help and they were outstanding! Additionally, I had Cade’s belongings marked with green painters tape and Kyle’s (for move-in at State College) with blue painters tape so it was clear to everyone what to take to the room! Keeping it simple and EASY!
Setting up his room
We cleaned the clothing closet, drawers, and anything else we felt needed a touch up and then started to unpack. I had all of the bedding and towels washed beforehand and ready to set up. The bedding was a little wrinkled, but that was the least of our concerns!
While I put the clothing away, Kevin and the guys assembled the shoe rack, the free-standing shelving unit and worked on setting up the computer.
Personalizing his space
Finally, everything was put away and he was able to personalize his space! That was the fun part. He knew what he wanted and is very happy with how his room came together. He has a few more things to hang up and adjust, but all in all, it’s good and he likes it.
Planning is KEY!
First of all, several weeks before move-in day, I got measurements of the space and together we planned how to best use and maximize every possible area. Cade is used to having about 65 inches of hanging space and now only has 36 inches. So, he decided to use drawers for his jeans, khakis and casual tees which freed up valuable hanging space! Once we knew what would work, we got a list together and shopped for supplies. We were definitely prepared for move-in day.
Additionally, we carved out some time a couple weeks ago to go through his dresser, closet and clothing. As a result of sorting through everything, he knew what to bring to college, what to donate, what needed to be purchased and what could stay at home! And, we had a ton of fun during the process too!
After one week, he is definitely enjoying college life and for that, I’m thankful!
Stay tuned for part 2 of move-in weekend with Kyle, our college Junior, at PSU!
