Let’s talk pantries. A very valuable part of the kitchen!
Who doesn’t appreciate a functional pantry that is arranged with maximum efficiency? In my household there is constant action in our pantry every day and I need it to be kept in order. I love being able to clearly see what I have and what I’m running low on when I make my weekly grocery list. Putting groceries away is a breeze too!
Are you ready for a pantry overhaul? Here are a few things to consider before starting:
- What’s working well?
- What are the problem areas and what gets out of control?
- Are you making the best use of every possible space?
- The number of shelves, pull-outs, drawers, hooks, etc.
- Do you store categories of non-perishables elsewhere in the kitchen?
- Do you buy in bulk?
- What do you use frequently and like to keep on hand?
- What are the categories of items currently stored in your pantry?
With those things in mind, schedule some time to completely unload your pantry! Go through every single item and toss anything that is expired or damaged. Relocate any items that belong elsewhere. If you come across an item that is still good, hasn’t expired, but you are not going to use, donate it! It is so wonderful to donate items while they are in good condition and useful for others!
Once the pantry is completely emptied and thoroughly cleaned, prepare the space for reloading!
Here are a few helpful tips before reloading:
- Adjust shelf height based on the types of food and storage containers.
- Add hooks where appropriate.
- Consider using expandable shelves, tiered organizers and turntables
- Contain loose items with baskets, boxes and containers.
- Label containers.
- Shelf liner for wire shelving is helpful.
- Utilize the back of pantry door too!
- Make sure lighting is good.
Now you’re ready to set up your pantry! In my pantry, what has been most helpful is to group, categorize and create “zones” according to how I cook, what is used most frequently, and ease of access for all members of my household! It works and is very easy to maintain!
A well-stocked, clean and organized pantry makes meal planning easy, saves a lot of time and helps to reduce waste!
