For those who love to cook and keep a hungry family happy, order in the kitchen is a must! Having a good system in place helps to keep clutter at bay! With Spring right around the corner, now is a great time to get your spices in order!
- Take Inventory! Gather together every single spice, herb, and extract you have in your kitchen and group them into categories according to type or how you use them. Alphabetical order is a great option too!
- Decide what you are going to keep or toss. Overtime, spices start to lose their flavor and aroma. Check the expiration dates and discard if necessary.
- Give the cabinet a thorough cleaning.
- Put everything back in the cabinet! Make the best use of space, keeping most frequently used spices easily accessible.
- If you are running low on a spice, now is a good time to add it to your shopping list.
Organize with Purpose:
Consider your natural tendencies, how you think and the space that is available for you to store your spices. There are a variety of ways to store spices such as cabinets, drawers, racks, spice boxes, bookcases and more! Whatever works best for you and your household is most important!
In my home, I use an upper cabinet and organize by type and how I cook. Extracts are located on a turntable on the upper shelf. Also on the upper shelf is a box with less frequently used spices. In addition, I have a second cabinet in the kitchen where I keep whole spices and a coffee grinder specifically used for grinding the whole spices. This works great because they are ready when needed and not taking up valuable space in the area where I prep. This works great for our family!
Limited on space?
You can place your spices in an appropriate box and store where convenient. Write the spice name on top of the container so it’s easy to view and easy to access. When you are ready to prepare a meal or bake your favorite cake all you need to do is pull out your box and you’ll have what you need right at hand.
There are many great organizational products in the marketplace. Here are a few of my favorites:
