There are three huge events that repeatedly happen every single day in the Stroble household – breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lots and lots of home cooked meals along with a lot of laughter, great conversation and family time! Thankfully! So I guess, it goes without saying…
The Kitchen is the heart of a home
Our family spends a lot of time in our kitchen. It’s the first place our sons hang out when they wake up in the morning or get home after school and work. Many family gatherings, Sunday suppers and team dinners have been hosted at our home with dinners served buffet style around the island. The occasional family “cook off” challenge has been fun too!
Oftentimes we’ve turned it into a crafting area or used the island as a gift wrapping center at Christmas. It’s definitely well used and enjoyed! And an area that I work hard to keep in order!
The last couple of weeks have brought a lot of change to our household. Everyday it’s noticed! Two of our sons are now at college and I miss their daily presence as I work in the kitchen. But, the cooking continues and I’m learning to make less or freeze more!
Back to the cooking
Our sons are hungry boys (Kevin too) and I love to feed them well. But, in order to cook well and efficiently, I need an organized and clean space every single day.
Is it always in perfect order? No, but I do put forth a consistent effort to keep it nice and well-maintained. So here are a few tips that have greatly helped in our home:
Just a few quick tips:
- Keep only in the kitchen what really belongs in the kitchen
- Donate duplicate items, or those you no longer use
- Create “zones” such as prep, cooking, serving, storing, cleanup
- Keep most frequently used items very accessible and visible
- Always put things back where they belong
- Keep your counter surfaces clear, clutter free and clean
I know, you probably have heard those tips before! Many times, too!
But, the number one tip, (In my opinon)…
Establish good systems and routines. And be willing to make adjustments as life situations bring about change. In doing so, you will be able to keep your kitchen beautiful, clutter- free and a delightful space for your family and friends! And, keep in mind, preparing and cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner is so much easier in an organized space!
One final thought
If your space, no matter the reason, has gotten out of hand – it’s okay. Just start where you are today. Clear one surface or tackle one drawer. Oftentimes, completing just one task will move the entire process forward!
